Criminal Defence Lawyers in Medicine Hat

Your Freedom is Our Priority

If You Have Been Charged In Medicine Hat, We Are Here To Help You.

White & Jeet Law defends people charged with serious criminal offences right across Alberta, with a strong presence serving Medicine Hat and the surrounding southeast region of the province.

At the helm are senior criminal lawyers Greg White, Sarvesh Jeet, Justin Dean, Amina Younas, David Ly, and Jessica Attwal, backed by a full bench of associate counsel and support staff. Our team appears in matters before the Medicine Hat Law Courts, including proceedings in the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and — on appeal — the Court of Appeal of Alberta.

The Medicine Hat criminal lawyers at our firm take on charges involving impaired driving, domestic violence, assault, drug offences, sexual offences, fraud, and firearms charges. When the stakes are high, we go to work — building a defence designed to challenge the Crown’s case and protect what matters to you.

If serious allegations have been laid against you, the police are looking into your conduct, or you’re losing sleep over the prospect of a permanent criminal record, our defence team can move quickly to get involved.

Being charged is overwhelming. The mix of dread, second-guessing, and uncertainty is something we see in nearly every client who walks through our doors — and we don’t take it lightly.

When a police investigation is underway, when charges have been formally laid, or when the long shadow of a conviction looms over your future, you deserve counsel that recognizes what’s actually at stake and gets to work immediately to defend it.

Court proceedings in Medicine Hat carry their own pressures, and going through the system without proper legal counsel makes a hard situation considerably harder.

Our firm has stood alongside accused individuals throughout Medicine Hat, Brooks, Redcliff, Bow Island, Dunmore, and the broader Cypress County region — often during what they describe as the worst stretch of their lives.

From provincial-level proceedings up through Alberta’s superior courts and all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, we focus on one thing: limiting the fallout to your liberty, your livelihood, and the way the world sees you.

  • Our approach draws on a thorough command of criminal law and procedure in Canada.
  • Our bench carries decades of cumulative courtroom experience in defence work.
  • Our outcomes speak for themselves through a long record of cases resolved favourably.

Criminal Charges We Defend in Medicine Hat

Focused defence across the full range of criminal matters, at every stage of the process — from first appearance and bail hearing through trial and appeal.

Our Medicine Hat lawyers regularly appear before the Alberta Court of Justice and the Court of King’s Bench, representing clients facing impaired driving and Immediate Roadside Sanctions, assault and domestic violence charges, drug offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, sexual offences, property and financial crimes, and serious indictable matters including robbery and homicide. We also handle administration of justice charges, youth matters under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeals, and applications for record suspensions and pardons.

Each case is approached with careful preparation, practical strategy, and a clear understanding of what is at stake — for the client, their family, and their future. Whether it’s a first-time charge that needs to stay off your record or a complex file requiring trial-level preparation and expert evidence, we provide the same standard of preparation and advocacy at every stage.

Medicine Hat Criminal Courts Process

After Arrest in Medicine Hat: What Happens Next

If you’ve been arrested and charged in Medicine Hat, you’ll be processed at the Medicine Hat Police Service headquarters at 884 2 Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8H2 (Non-emergency: 403-529-8481).

What follows from there depends on the seriousness of the charge and the circumstances of the arrest:

  • You may be released on an undertaking signed at the police station, with a condition that you appear in court on a specified date.
  • If the police decide to hold you, you’ll be moved next door to the Medicine Hat Remand Centre at 874 2 Street SE and brought before a Justice of the Peace within 24 hours for a bail hearing, as required under s.503 of the Criminal Code.

While you’re in custody, your family will hit a wall if they try to get information by calling the police service or the remand centre directly. That’s where we come in — as your defence counsel, we can speak with the people who matter to you and keep them informed about your situation and the next steps.

Getting You Released at the Bail Hearing

Alberta runs all first-appearance bail hearings through a centralized provincial Hearing Office, with the accused joining by video or telephone from the facility holding them. For Medicine Hat arrests, that means your hearing takes place remotely from either the police cells at 884 2 Street SE or the Medicine Hat Remand Centre, with a Justice of the Peace presiding from the Hearing Office.

When your file lands on our desk, your White & Jeet Law lawyer gets to work immediately:

  • Reaches out to the Medicine Hat Police Service or Medicine Hat Remand Centre to make direct contact with you.
  • Connects with the Crown Bail Office to start a conversation with the prosecutor handling your matter and negotiate the terms of your release.
  • Pulls and reviews the police disclosure package laying out the allegations before the hearing gets underway.
  • Stands as your advocate at the hearing itself, making the strongest possible case for you to walk out.

Most bail orders come with conditions attached for the duration of your case — that’s standard. What’s not standard is the effort we put into negotiating the lightest, least-intrusive conditions the Crown and Court will accept.

Medicine Hat’s Criminal Courts

Medicine Hat sits at the heart of the Medicine Hat Judicial District, a region that covers Brooks (its formal circuit point) and the wider southeastern corner of the province, including the City of Brooks, the County of Forty Mile, Cypress County, the Eastern Irrigation District communities, and rural areas stretching to the Saskatchewan border. Court matters originating in Brooks have their own sitting schedule, but the district’s administrative and judicial centre is the Medicine Hat courthouse.

Proceedings are heard at 460 1 Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 0A8 — a 1919-era heritage building that doubles as the oldest provincial courthouse in continuous use anywhere in Alberta, and was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 1978. A 1986 addition expanded the facility, and today it houses courtrooms for both the Alberta Court of Justice and the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, connected through the basement level.

The courthouse handles the full spectrum of criminal work — docket appearances, bail reviews, sentencings, preliminary inquiries, summary conviction trials, and full Court of King’s Bench jury trials for indictable matters. Medicine Hat is also one of only seven communities in Alberta to operate a Drug Treatment Court (DTC), a specialty docket that gives qualifying non-violent accused with substance use issues a path to address the root cause of their offending through structured treatment, drug testing, judicial monitoring, and case management in place of jail time. The Medicine Hat DTC has been led for several years by the southern region’s assistant chief justice.
