Criminal Defence Lawyers in Red Deer

Your Freedom is Our Priority

Experienced Criminal Defence Lawyers Serving Red Deer

White & Jeet Law is a criminal defence firm representing people charged with serious offences right across the province, with a dedicated focus on Red Deer and the broader central Alberta region.

Our firm is led by senior criminal lawyers Greg White, Sarvesh Jeet, Justin Dean, Amina Younas, David Ly, and Jessica Attwal, supported by a deep bench of associate counsel and legal staff. Our team appears regularly at the new Red Deer Justice Centre, handling matters before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and on appeal before the Court of Appeal of Alberta.

The Red Deer criminal defence lawyers at our firm represent clients accused of impaired driving, domestic violence, assault, drug offences, sexual offences, fraud, and firearms charges. When the stakes are real, we fight the charges, not just process them.

If you’ve been charged with a serious offence, the RCMP is investigating you, or you’re losing sleep over how a conviction could reshape your future, our defence team is ready to step in and start working on your behalf.

We understand how unsettling a criminal charge is — the shock, the second-guessing, the way it pulls focus from every other part of your life. It’s one of the hardest things a person goes through, and we never lose sight of that.

Whether the police are still building their case, charges have been laid, or you’re staring down the possibility of a permanent record, you need counsel who recognizes what a conviction would actually cost you — and moves fast to protect against that outcome.

Central Alberta’s criminal courts move quickly, and trying to find your footing without experienced legal representation only puts you further behind.

Our firm has stood beside accused individuals throughout Red Deer, Lacombe, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Rocky Mountain House, Stettler, Rimbey, and the surrounding communities of central Alberta during what’s often the most difficult chapter of their lives.

We handle cases at every level of court in Alberta — from first appearances through to jury trials and beyond — including matters before the Supreme Court of Canada, working to shield our clients’ liberty, livelihoods, and reputations from lasting damage:

  • Our defence approach is grounded in a thorough command of Canadian criminal law and procedure.
  • Our team brings decades of cumulative courtroom experience to every file we open.
  • Our results are reflected in a long record of favourable outcomes for the people we represent.

Criminal Charges We Defend in Red Deer

Focused defence across the full range of criminal matters, at every stage of the process — from first appearance and bail hearing through trial and appeal.

Our Red Deer lawyers regularly appear before the Alberta Court of Justice, representing clients facing impaired driving and Immediate Roadside Sanctions, assault and domestic violence charges, drug offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, sexual offences, property and financial crimes, and serious indictable matters including robbery and homicide. We also handle administration of justice charges, youth matters under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeals, and applications for record suspensions and pardons.

Each case is approached with careful preparation, practical strategy, and a clear understanding of what is at stake — for the client, their family, and their future. Whether it’s a first-time charge that needs to stay off your record or a complex file requiring trial-level preparation and expert evidence, we provide the same standard of preparation and advocacy at every stage.

Red Deer Criminal Courts Process

After Arrest in Red Deer: What Happens Next

If you’ve been arrested and charged in Red Deer, you’ll typically be processed at the Red Deer RCMP detachment at 4602 51 Avenue, Red Deer, AB (Non-emergency 24/7: 403-406-2200). Unlike Calgary, Lethbridge, or Medicine Hat — which are policed by their own municipal services — Red Deer’s policing is delivered by the RCMP under a municipal policing agreement with the City.

What happens after processing depends on the charge and the officer’s read of the situation:

  • You may be released on an undertaking signed at the detachment, with a requirement to attend court on a future date.
  • If the RCMP decide to hold you, you’ll be transferred to the Red Deer Remand Centre at 4720 49 Street and brought before a Justice of the Peace within 24 hours for a bail hearing, as required under s.503 of the Criminal Code.

Your family won’t get answers calling the detachment or the remand centre — both are restricted on releasing inmate information. That’s why having defence counsel involved early matters: as your lawyers, we can liaise directly with the people closest to you and walk them through what’s happening and what to expect.

Getting You Released at the Bail Hearing

In Alberta, first-appearance bail hearings run through a province-wide Hearing Office on the Alberta Court of Justice’s centralized docket. The accused appears by video or teleconference from wherever they’re being held — for Red Deer arrests, that’s normally the Red Deer RCMP cells or the Red Deer Remand Centre — and a Justice of the Peace presides remotely.

The moment your matter reaches us, your White & Jeet Law lawyer moves into action:

  • Makes direct contact with you through the RCMP detachment or the Red Deer Remand Centre.
  • Opens a line with the Crown Bail Office to begin release negotiations with the prosecutor assigned to your file.
  • Obtains and reviews the police disclosure outlining the allegations before the JP convenes the hearing.
  • Argues your case at the bail hearing itself and pushes hard for your release.

Bail orders in Alberta almost always come with conditions attached — that’s just how the system works. What separates a routine release order from a workable one is the effort put into negotiating those conditions down to something you can actually live with: minimal sureties, reasonable curfews, and terms that don’t disrupt your ability to keep working or supporting your family.

Red Deer’s Criminal Courts

Red Deer serves as the central judicial hub for the Red Deer Judicial District, a sprawling catchment that takes in communities across central Alberta — including Lacombe, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Olds, and the circuit court points of Rocky Mountain House, Rimbey, Stettler, and Coronation. Each circuit location runs its own sitting schedule with Alberta Court of Justice judges traveling out from Red Deer, but the judicial centre of gravity is in the city itself.

As of March 2025, all proceedings have moved into the brand-new Red Deer Justice Centre at 4810 48 Avenue — a nine-storey, twelve-courtroom facility (with room to scale to sixteen) that consolidates the Alberta Court of Justice and the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta under one roof. Built to LEED Silver standards, the building includes dedicated suites for judicial dispute resolution, civil and family mediation, and a purpose-built Indigenous courtroom designed to accommodate cultural practices including smudging ceremonies — a meaningful step toward more culturally appropriate proceedings for Indigenous accused persons.

The new courthouse processes the full range of criminal work: first-appearance docket court (running Monday to Friday in Courtroom 1100), in-custody dockets, federal prosecutions and domestic violence files (Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.), Youth Justice Court (Thursdays), preliminary inquiries, summary conviction trials, and Court of King’s Bench jury trials for serious indictable offences. Red Deer is also home to the Red Deer Drug Treatment Court (DTC), launched in 2021 and operated in partnership with the John Howard Society of Red Deer. The DTC offers eligible non-violent accused with substance use issues an alternative track combining intensive judicial supervision, random drug testing, treatment, and community case management — designed to address the addiction underlying the offending rather than simply incarcerating its consequences.
